What does C.Ss.R. mean?

The four letters, C.Ss.R., that follow a Redemptorist’s name represent the Congregation’s official Latin name: Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris. The English translation is The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

What do you mean by "mission"?

In the church, "mission" has an anointed place in our history. The early apostles were on mission to spread the story of Jesus' life, passion and resurrection. Jesus gave us the mission to "go out to all the world and spread the good news." A long tradition in the church is to send men, women, priests, sisters, laity on mission to other countries. These are called foreign missionaries. While the Redemptorists do have many foreign missions, "mission" in this sense means preaching to the local church, or to those in the United States. There are (unfortunately) many people who do not know Jesus or are put off by His Church and it is our mission to bring these people to His truth and life.

Who are the Redemptorists?

The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly called “The Redemptorists”, was founded by Saint Alphonsus Liguori in 1732 to follow the example of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer, by preaching the word of God, especially to the poor. Mission preaching is a foundational pastoral work of the Redemptorists. As an apostolic community we work together to bring God’s Good News to many unaware of the abundance of divine love, living out our motto: “With Him there is plentiful redemption.” (Psalm 130)

The Baltimore (or Eastern U.S.) Province engages in many activities besides mission preaching. We minister in parishes, retreat houses, with Hispanics and Chinese, in the inner-city and suburbs, to those in prison, with AIDS and in hospitals, to name a few. We have nearly 200 members, and over 5,000 members world-wide in 77 countries.

Where can I get more information about the Redemptorists?

The website for the Baltimore (east coast) province is www.redemptorists.net and the Generalate in Rome is www.cssr.com.

I am not Catholic but I attended your mission recently. What can I do to learn more about the Catholic faith?

First of all, thank you for "making the mission!" The seeds that Jesus planted within you can now be nourished by going to your pastor or his representative and inquiring about RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults), or Adult Faith formation. This will be a process in which, through Scripture and sharing, you will come to know the basic tenets of the Catholic faith.

I would like to make a donation to help with your ministry- how can this be done?

Simple... just click on this link:
