Is there really power in prayer? Does God even hear our prayers?
How often have we simply responded, "I will remember you in my prayers", to someone who says that there is a need of prayer in their life or for a family member or a friend?" Some of us are involved in prayer circles where many pray for a sick or dying person. There are some miracles where a person is cured, there are also many who are comforted by this loving Jesus, as they carry their cross and accept what is going on in their lives. We are all one body, brothers and sisters in Christ. When we believe that, then we must assume that in praying for each other, our prayers are God's prayers.
At all Masses during the Prayers of the Faithful a lector prays aloud the prayers that are in all of our hearts. In some churches there is a book of intentions in which people write specific needs and this book may or may not be carried in the Offertory Procession. In the Our Father we pray "thy will be done," meaning that we know that God hears our prayer and we are ready to accept the answer to that prayer.
Does God answer our prayers? Yes, and sometimes the answer is "No." We can pray that a friend who is dying of cancer be cured. God's plan might be to take that person home to heaven where there is no more suffering or pain. We may pray for years that a child come home to the church, and I know of mothers who have done just that. In God's time this prayer may be granted. At some times we never know just how our prayers are answered. Trust that they are heard and answered by this loving God in some way. Imagine when you are praying that you are enfolded in the arms of Jesus; ask him to help you as you pray to him.
