How can I learn to pray better?
Prayer is a conversation! If you know how to talk—and know
how to listen!—you can pray! Prepare for this time by making
yourself comfortable, and breathing slowly in and out, using
some sort of mantra to get you in tune with the Lord and
your soul. When distractions enter, slowly go back to your
mantra to lead you back to God. This mantra could be "Jesus,
son of God, have mercy on me a sinner", or "Abba Father" or
any other holy, short phrase you want to use- find one that
feels comfortable to you. The reason for a mantra is to
clear and quiet your mind to be ready to listen to Jesus.
Prayer is breathing! Prayer ends when you breathe your last
breath and enter into eternal life.
Try to set aside some special time every day to talk with God. Find a
quiet space and time, and try to make it the same time
daily. The bible or the weekly readings from the daily
Masses are a way to start. Slowly read a passage, something
will stand out as God speaking to you personally. Try a few
minutes of this kind of prayer and gradually expand the time
spent listening to God. Praying the "Our Father" slowly is
one of the best ways to pray and meditate on Jesus and his
love for you. This is the prayer that Jesus gave to us when
asked "Teach us Lord how to pray?" Let each word of the Our
Father slowly seep into your mind and soul, meditating and
let the words speak to you. The rosary is a longer form of a
prayer mantra that can, when said while mediating on the
life of Jesus, become a long and silent meditation on his
life and love for us all. This form of prayer allows your
mind to wander letting God lead you where he wants you to
go.
Below are two great links to more information about how to
pray. This first one can lead you to different paths of
prayer. You will find your own rhythm for prayer and do what
feels right for you.

The second site is the helpful links section called Soul
Space. There are many suggestions there, such as the link to
USCCB, and the Universalis (the Divine Office), and many
other ways to lead you to quiet and prayer filled
conversations with Jesus who is waiting for us to come and
visit him. God speaks to us in many, many ways, often
through nature and other people. Listen and look and you
will often see God reflected in your life and the lives of
those whose paths you cross. Once we start looking outward
and inward our journey toward this better prayer life that
we seek becomes as natural as every breath we take.
