How can you confess your sins to a man? Why can’t you go straight to God?

The sacrament of Penance is a special sacrament given to us by Jesus through the Church. Those who use this sacrament on a regular basis find that it can deepen their spiritual life. When we confess our sins to a priest those sins are forgiven once and for all. In time the personality of the confessor loses its importance as the gift of the sacrament takes on greater significance. In other words, even if the priest is not particularly helpful or even formulaic, there is something about this sacrament which no other ritual can offer.

A Loving and forgiving God knows our sorrow and guilt whenever we have done wrong, even if we only repent in our minds. The sacrament of Penance simply reinforces that forgiveness that is always there from this loving God. We repent every time we attend Mass and participate in the Penitential rite of the Mass. Penance makes real the grace that is in the other sacraments, but specific to where the person is at that moment. The priest is the mediator for Jesus, and therefore you are speaking to Jesus when you are receiving the sacrament of Penance. You will find that when you leave the confessional after an honest confession that you have met your Creator and that you are loved. A priest is not so much a judge or forgiver (only God forgives sins) but rather someone who can help bring about the healing that God wants to happen in you.
