Isn't abortion a choice and a right for women to decide?
No one has the right to take the life of an unborn child. This is never allowed, especially when done so as a convenience. However, couples with unwanted pregnancies have chosen to give up these babies for adoption to the many childless couples who will love and raise them as their own. There is something so right about this solution.
In the words
of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, ."Life is the greatest gift
that God has bestowed on humans. Since human life is
created in the image of God, it belongs to him. We have no
right to destroy it.
Catholics believe that life begins at conception; we abhor any intentional harm that directly causes the death of a fetus. "Since January 22, 1973 Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton1, more than 48 million American lives have been ended by abortion. Among all the justice issues we as a society should view with grave concern, abortion is a key social evil."
While the Church holds that the act of abortion is intrinsically evil, She and her priests are compassionate to those who have committed this sin. Only God judges these women as well as the men and women who complicit in the death of the innocent children. Studies show that 99% of women who choose to have an abortion suffer afterwards (sometimes for many, many years) from guilt and depression. Catholics must reach out to these women as Christ would, and ask how we can help heal their pain. Today most dioceses offer programs both for women who are confused and fearful of unwanted pregnancies as well as for those who need healing after an abortion. Project Rachel is just one program.
